Jean-Andre Venel better known as father of orthopaedics established
the first orthopedic institute for the treatment of skeletal
deformities in children in 1780, Orthopaedic ssurgery evolved
majorly during World Wars. Before that Antonius Mathysen, who
was a Dutch military surgeon, invented the plaster of Paris
cast in 1851.
Later David L. MacIntosh conducted the first successful surgery
for the management of the torn anterior cruciate ligament
of the knee. Sskiers, field athletes, and dancers suffer from
this problem that results in an end to their flourishing careers
due to permanent joint instability.. The subsequesnt development
of ACL reconstruction surgery has allowed numerous athletes
to return to the demands of sports at all levels.
Modern orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal research has
sought to make surgery less invasive and to make implanted
components better and more durable.
