It is a surgical method to remove and replace an arthritic
or damaged joint with an artificial joint. It is the final
option available only when other treatment options cannot
provide adequate relief from pain and/or disability.
Preparations for joint replacement surgery:

Current medication
It is very important to discuss with your physician the medications
you are currently taking before planning for the surgery.
Some medications need to be temporarily discontinued until
after the surgery by your physician or orthopaedist.
Discharge planning
discharge planning requires utmost care and includes instructions
on care of the incision, pain medications, activities, special
exercises, and other home care instructions as told by your
phisician.
Complications that may still occur are the following:
wound infection or infection around the prosthesis
blood clotting
malfunction of the prosthesis due to wear and tear, breakage,
dislocation, or loosening.
